Troop 101 of First Baptist Church attended the second week of boy scout summer camp at Camp Bud Schiele from June 26 to July 2. The local troop comprised of thirty-three scouts and seven adult leaders won both Best of Bud Schiele and Clean Campsite Award for the third year in a row along with the Spirit Stick for a sweeping victory of the three highest camp awards. Garry Cabaniss, troop committee chairman and chartered organization member stated, “I’ve been involved with this troop for 25 years and we have never won Best of Bud Schiele three years in a row. That says a lot about our scouts and shows the benefits of a boy-led troop.” Troop 101 participated in every event offered at camp and returned home with eight ribbons from a scouting competition called the Grand Ole Adventure. The boy scouts earned on third place, six second places and a first place in the troop catapult competition for the fifteenth year in a row. When asked as camp what the strategy for the troops success entailed, senior patrol leader Brandon Joyce replied, “Team-work. Our troop works very hard in preparation for camp and we work even harder during the week we are here. The fun comes later after we win.” Despite an arduous schedule of flag assemblys, merit badge classes, and a multitude of daily camp events, the boys got started each day at 5:45am to clean their campsite and earned a perfect score after daily inspections from the camp staff. Scoutmaster Al Hansen pointed out, “We have older scouts leading and setting the example for the younger scouts and I am impressed with the standard they have established this year. Our goal is always excellence and our boys have achieved it at camp because of their dedication to the goal they chose for themselves. I hope they apply this lesson to their endeavors in life when they become adults”. Along with the achievements from competition was the completion of a camp conversation project. This year the troop installed posts and chain to border the commemorative flag pole project constructed last summer for the centennial of Boy Scouts of America. Assistant senior patrol leader Jacob Richards summed up this year’s camping experience. “We will remember this accomplishment for the rest of our lives. It has been an honor to lead and work with other scouts willing to make the sacrifices necessary to attain our troop’s goal. This summer camp was the best ever.” Click the link to see the Summer Camp 2011 Photo Album.
